HISTORY

The group was born in course 93-94, with a double motivation; on the one hand to complement the work of the successful trekking group of the mentioned high school and on the other hand to give reply to the new conception of education which brought the L.O.G.S.E. law, trying that students see the High School like something more than lessons and giving them the chance of complete their education with another kind of  knowledges.

In addition, we can't forget the boom of bicycle and cycling in our country, which resulted in a considerable increase of the number of people which felt encouraged to practise it, not always in the best conditions because of the almost nonexistent structures available.

But in spite of most of the bought bicycles were "mountain" bikes, the shortage of places to cycle already mentioned with the insecurity that causes (lot of kids couldn't hardly cycle because of that risk) and some ignorance of its possibilities led to use them mainly for short trips around home or between nearby villages (we have to consider the special characteristics of Camargo council, with big distances between points of the same council).

OBJECTIVES:

The objectives of this group could be summarized in:

  • To present other ways of occupying leisure time.
  • To boost friendship and and comradeship, knowing people from the high school outside the usual environment of classrooms.
  • To learn to value the nature, history and ways of life in general, specially those of Cantabria, in order to respect them and become aware of the necessity of preserving them.
  • To know other interesting geographic points in order to get a more complete education.

METHODOLOGY:

Excursions are usually made on saturday and vary in length and characteristics, but most of them oscillate between 25 and 35 kilometers (which is considered reasonable for any student) confronting the ascent in the first half of the day to have lunch in the highest part of the route and to descend to the arrival point in the second half of the day.

We should emphasize the lunch time, in which people relax and share time with classmates and lots of time start a relationship witother people they even didn't know, talking about the route, or the landscapes of our country, or the more typical anecdotes of young students.

Is this a leisure moment in which the food is shared andin spite the usual it culd be, it will always have the special flavour given by been contemplating the territory of Cantabria, frequently unknown for a generation that despite having access to the modern "global culture"  are unfamiliar with many of their closest wonders.

Nevertheless, if ther is an aspect of methodology that emphasizes over all, this is the helmet use, because even ascending or going very slowly, a fall could occur and we must be prepared.

By the route the group keeps united (although with some flexibility when the land allows it) with a person in charge in front and another one at the back, communicated by talkies. Also regroupings are made, some of them at interesting points in which anything can be learned.

So that students and their parents could be informed about the route and what can be olearned in it, all those could be interested in the excursion are called to a meeting during the week, in which they are given an informative sheet with the detailed route, its length, profile, departure time and equipment advices, as well as suitable observations for each excursion.

In addition, in order to round off the work made during the course, at its end we organize an excursion during a few days, which is usually the most attractive for kids, because besides cycling other activities are made and being a couple of days away from home is alway specially interesting for first courses students.

Finally, we just want to encourage people to participate in the activities that, like this, are organized with effort by high schools, because many things that are learned outside the classrooms can't be learned in them.
